When a tooth becomes severely decayed, a simple filling may not be enough to stop or repair the damage. In these instances, a crown is your best option for stopping further damage from being done.

Tooth decay is caused by sugary foods. The bacteria that live in plaque eat the sugars and produce an acidic waste product that eats at tooth enamel. Sometimes these acids can continue to eat at enamel for up to 20 minutes. Over time, the damage done by this acid can cause cavities.

Cavities can be painful. They can also cause bad breath, and discolored teeth. If left untreated, cavities can lead to abscess, resulting in fever, swollen glands, and deep throbbing pain.

In the case of severe decay, it may be necessary to fit the tooth with a dental crown. A crown fits perfectly over the decayed tooth, preventing further decay, eliminating pain, and restoring function and beauty.

All decay is removed from the effected tooth and a mold is made to cast your new crown. Careful attention is paid to the shape and color of your new crown to ensure a natural looking fit. A temporary crown is placed over the tooth to provide comfort and function until your new crown is ready.

After the permanent crown has been placed, you can resume your normal activities right away, secure in the fact that the decay has been removed, and further problems avoided.
