Probiotics and Periodontitis

Periodontitis is an advanced for of gum disease that can lead to a host of oral and systemic health problems. For many patients, this type of gum disease is chronic, and traditional treatments often fail to completely address the problem.
To increase the efficacy of treatment, antibiotics are typically used. While these prove useful in some cases, not all patients can tolerate antibiotics and some prefer to avoid them due to their potential health risks. This makes recent studies showing probiotics equally effective at treating chronic periodontitis very welcome indeed.
Probiotics occur naturally in the human gut and are linked to immune response and digestive health. One strain in particular, lactobacillus reuteri, has been shown to help prevent tooth decay. This same strain has, in recent studies, shown to increase the efficacy of nonsurgical gum treatment by 53 percent. Better still, l. reuteri is readily available in a number of cultured and fermented foods as well as in supplement form, making its addition to the diet extremely easy.
There are a number of things that may be required to properly treat gum disease. Virginia Beach dentist Dr. Michael Folck will work individually with you to determine which solutions are best for your particular needs.
