Treating Anxiety with Sedation Dentistry

Do you put off routine dental visits because of anxiety issues? A significant percentage of people in America experience dental phobia, and five to nine percent of the population experiences it so strongly that they avoid all dental visits, even when they obviously have a condition that requires treatment. Sedation dentistry is one method patients can use to make their visit to the dentist calm and relaxing.

In traditional sedation dentistry, you are given medication that relaxes you into a "twilight state," which keeps you conscious while inhibiting the chemical processes that give rise to panic or fear. Many patients who undergo sedation dentistry at our Norfolk practice report feeling as though they were in a calm, relaxing dream.

Candidates for sedation dentistry meet at least one of the following criteria:

·         A compulsive fear of dentists or dental procedures
·         Resistance to numbing medications
·         Several complex procedures being performed in the same appointment
·         Previous traumatic experience at the dentist's
·         Difficulty swallowing or a strong gag reflex

At the practice of Dr. Michael Folck, we do everything we can to make our Norfolk  practice a friendly and comfortable place for patients. The environment is closer to a spa than a traditional dentist's office, and we offer both sedation dentistry and sleep dentistry to patients who request any assistance with dental anxiety.

If you have had issues with anxiety at the dentist's office in the past, then you may want to consider the sedation dentistry options available at the offices of Dr. Michael Folck, DDS. Contact us to set up an appointment by calling (877) 206-3444. We serve patients in Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and the surrounding areas.
