Sleep Apnea

Are you getting a good night’s sleep? Mounting evidence suggests links between sleep loss and obesity, depression, heart failure, and most recently diabetes. Getting seven to eight hours of sound sleep each night is one of the easiest, most accessible ways to help keep your body healthy. But what happens when sleep in interrupted by narrowed airways leading to a cessation of breathing? If this is a persistent problem, occurring for more than ten seconds at a time, several times an hour, the consequences can be dire.

Sleep apnea is caused when airways in the nose, mouth, or throat become narrowed or blocked. A problematic jawbone, large uvula, or enlarged tonsils or adenoids can all lead to this disorder because they press down on the airways when you lay down. A number of treatments exist to treat and cure this condition.

Your normal sleeping cycle, essential to optimal health, can be thrown off balance by sleep apnea. When you stop breathing in your sleep your sleep cycle is interrupted, leading to increased fatigue and potentially deadly diseases. The good news is this condition is entirely treatable.

If you or a loved one in Virginia Beach, Virginia suffers from interrupted sleep due to sleep apnea, please contact Michael Folck, DDS for an initial consultation.
