Can I do sedation dentistry if I take medications?

Many people fear the dentist. Some are so frightened that they refuse to visit the dentist. If you are in the Norfolk area, sedation dentistry could be our solution for you. We will take your complete medical history and discuss your current medications to determine if sedation dentistry is right for you.

One of the benefits of sedation dentistry is that you have several different options for the type of sedation you receive for your procedure. With so many options, it is easy to find one that will not react negatively with your current medications.

Most sedatives used for sedation dentistry will be taken orally just before your procedure. We commonly use hydroxyzine (Vistaril), larazepam (Ativan), zaleoplon (Sonata), and diazepam (Valium). We can also use nitrous oxide - laughing gas.

With sedation dentistry, you can relax in the dentist's chair and let go of your anxiety. Unlike sleep dentistry, you will never be completely under. There are no IVs or anesthesia to worry about, and your recovery from the sedative does not take long.
