What is TMJ?

If you’ve ever woken up and been unable to open your mouth in the morning, you may suffer from TMJ. This uncomfortable joint disorder can cause a wide variety of seemingly unrelated symptoms, but fortunately, a qualified dentist may be able to help. To learn more about TMJ, please contact Virginia Beach dentist Dr. Michael P. Folck, DDS, at 877-206-3444 today to schedule an appointment.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects the skull to the jaw. Disorders involving this joint are called temporomandibular joint disorders, variously abbreviated as TMD or simply TMJ. Such conditions can cause a wide range of symptoms including:

     Headaches
Pain in the jaw, neck, and shoulders
     Nighttime grinding or clenching
Popping or clicking when the jaw is opened and closed

Many TMJ disorders are caused by improper alignment of the bite, but by correcting a patient’s bite, a neuromuscular dentist can reduce or eliminate a patient’s TMJ symptoms. Usually these TMJ treatments involve wearing a custom-made oral appliance at night. In some cases, restorative dental work may also be needed to correct bite issues.

Dr. Folck uses state-of-the-art technology to diagnose TMJ disorders and determine the ideal resting place of your jaw. Such information is critical to planning an effective treatment plan, and we are pleased to offer this cutting edge capability.

If you suffer from TMJ symptoms, relief may just be a phone call away. To discover how a qualified neuromuscular dentist can help, please contact Dr. Michael P. Folck, DDS, at 877-206-3444 today to schedule an appointment with our Chesapeake cosmetic dentist.

How long do porcelain crowns last?

Patients with significant tooth damage often rely on dental crowns to provide the structural and functional support that their natural teeth may no longer be able to deliver. But how long do crowns last? Please contact Chesapeake cosmetic dentist Dr. Michael P. Folck, DDS, at 877-206-3444 today to schedule an appointment and learn more about the benefits of porcelain crowns.

When a tooth becomes cracked, severely chipped, or is compromised by decay, a crown is frequently the treatment of choice. The crown is placed over the tooth to protect it and support the adjacent teeth. In some cases, a crown may also be used to mask natural teeth that have become severely discolored or that a patient finds cosmetically unappealing.

Dental crowns can be made of numerous materials, but porcelain is a popular choice for its durability and appearance. When well cared for, a porcelain dental crown can be expected to last at least a decade, perhaps as long as 20 years. Some crowns may require some adjustment or other treatment as early as five years after placement, but this is normally only the case when the patient hasn’t followed proper hygiene.
