Choosing an Orthodontist

If you've been hiding your smile behind your hands because your teeth embarrass you, it's time to find an orthodontist. Choosing the right orthodontist for yourself isn't hard. You just need to know what to look for.

Experience

An orthodontist is a dental specialist. You want to make sure the orthodontist you select has the years of experience necessary to meet your needs and plan for your sustained care. You want to ensure that the orthodontist understands the phases of orthodontics and discusses your personalized strategy for attaining your most beautiful and healthy smile.

Comfort

Are you comfortable with the orthodontist? Is the office in a convenient location? Is his staff friendly and concerned for your needs? Is scheduling appointments easy? Feel free to ask questions. The right orthodontist should be able to explain what he is doing and have time to make you feel comfortable with the recommended treatment.

Recommendations

Recommendations from your friends or your dentist are a great way to narrow your options. How have your friends been treated by this orthodontist? Remember to check out the orthodontist's website and online reviews. Meet the doctor and take an office tour.

If you're looking for a Norfolk orthodontist, contact Dr. Michael Folck, DDS for your initial consultation.

Don't Fear the Dentist

If the thought of seeing a dentist makes you cringe, then sedation dentistry could be the answer for you. Many people fear the dentist, have a bad gag reflex, or have a low pain threshold. The answer isn't avoiding the dentist. It may be sedation dentistry.

How Sedation Dentistry Works

Sedation dentistry can put you at ease whether you are coming for a tooth cleaning or a more invasive procedure. There are no needles or IVs, and you are never completely unconscious. You will be relaxed for your procedure and recover quickly from the sedative afterward.

You will take a sedative orally before your procedure. Common sedatives are zaleoplon (sonata), hydroxyzine (Vistaril), larazepam (Ativan), and diazepam (Valium). We also use nitrous oxide (laughing gas) for some of our patients.

The benefits of sedation dentistry extend beyond just relieving any anxiety you're feeling about seeing the dentist. A sedative will also eliminate the possibility of muscle fatigue from being tense during your procedure, and you can have multiple procedures completed at once because you won't be anxious about leaving.

If you live in or around Chesapeake and have been fearing the dentist, fear no more.  Contact Dr. Michael P. Folck, DDS to schedule an initial consultation today and discuss your sedation dentistry options. Dr. Folck also serves patients in the Virginia Beach, Newport News, Norfolk, Hampton, and Portsmouth areas.
