What Is The Difference Between Sedation Dentistry and Sleep Dentistry?

Many patients are confused by the terms “sedation dentistry” and “sleep dentistry.” Both use anesthesia to allow patients with significant dental anxieties to undergo needed procedures. However, they’re very different procedures, and Chesapeake dentist Dr. Michael Folck only offers sedation dentistry.

The essential difference is in your level of consciousness during your dental procedure. With sleep dentistry, you will be completely unconscious, unable to respond or follow instructions while you undergo dental work.
Some dentists perform sleep dentistry, but it presents some significant risks of complications, and recovery from general anesthesia takes a long time.

By contrast, sedation dentistry from Dr. Folck allows Chesapeake-area patients to remain in a relaxed, dream-like state where they’re still awake and responsive. Our dentist doesn’t use general anesthesia; instead, we utilize one of a few different types of sedatives, including:

  • Zaleoplon
  • Hydroxyzine
  • Larazepam
  • Valium
The risk of complications or side effects is greatly reduced, as is recovery time. The benefits of sedation dentistry are significant and hard to overstate.

We understand you might have questions. Dr. Folck is happy to answer them and put your mind at ease.
